Not sure about the heat? Want to lose weight? Not as bendy as some? Read on to learn more about Bikram Yoga. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to speak to the friendly staff at reception.
There are several reasons for the heat. It is there to protect your body, assisting to warm your muscles which allows you to work deeply and safely in the postures. The heat also thins the blood, opening the capillaries and clearing the circulatory system. You will sweat! In doing so, you will start to detoxify the body, flushing the body of toxins through the skin. The heat is also a mental challenge! It will help you strengthen the mind, body and emotions – all in 90 minutes!
Wear light clothing that you can move in. You are going to sweat so it is advisable to avoid long trousers and long-sleeved tops. Shorts and a tank top are great. Some men will just wear shorts and many women will wear shorts with a cropped sports top.
Please bring a yoga mat, 2 large shower-sized towels and a bottle of water. All of these are available at the front desk for a small fee.
Having a headache after class can be for several reasons. The main reason is dehydration. Drink plenty of water and replace your electrolytes after class and make sure you hydrate adequately for your next class. We stock several electrolytes at the studio to assist you with your hydration. Headaches can also be a result of insufficient oxygen. So remember….BREATHE! It is very easy to hold your breath during a posture, but your teacher will always remind you to continue breathing!
First and foremost, always seek medical advice from your doctor and follow their advice accordingly. It is not recommended that you start Bikram yoga for the first time if you are pregnant. We do sell Rajashree’s pregnancy yoga DVD (Bikram’s wife) at the studio, which you are welcome to purchase and practice at home. If you have had a regular practice for at least 1 year we advise you to take a break from Bikram yoga during the 1st trimester. Rajashree’s pregnancy yoga can be practiced at home during this time. During the 2nd and 3rd trimester, you are welcome to practice in the heated room again, modifying the postures to those in Rajashree’s pregnancy sequence. We encourage you to also place your mat near the cooler areas of the studio, eg; by the door. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to speak to a teacher at the front desk.
It is recommended that we drink around 2 litres of water a day to maintain optimum health. On the days you are practicing Bikram yoga – double that! Always hydrate before and after class. If it is your first time, try and begin hydrating yourself a couple of days before you intend to practice. Remember that you lose water through your sweat, so you need to replace the fluids you lose and also hydrate your body after your class. Taking an electrolyte to assist in replacing minerals (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium) lost through heavy sweating is also recommended for after class. We sell a range of electrolytes at the studio.
Avoid eating around 2 hours before class. Food that is light and easy to digest is recommended for this meal prior to your Bikram yoga class.
Always seek advice from your doctor if you have an injury or illness before beginning your Bikram yoga practice. It is also important to inform your Bikram yoga teacher about ANY existing medical conditions before your class. We can always advise on how to maximise your yoga practice in order to assist with any pre-existing conditions.
No! If you cannot touch your toes or your hamstrings seem to no longer exist, then this yoga is for you! Within the heated room you will see and feel incredible results as you begin to mould and reshape your muscles. Each posture prepares you for the next posture and systematically stretches and strengthens your muscles. You’ll be saying “hello” to your hammies again before you know it!
Bikram yoga is a cardiovascular workout and you can burn over 500 calories per class! Practicing in the heat also assists in effectively burning fat and so together with a healthy food and beverage intake, you can certainly expect to lose weight with Bikram yoga.
Come as often as you can! Quite simply, the more times you practice the better you will feel. We understand your time is precious when juggling work/family/friends and 1 class a week is better than nothing at all! 3-4 times a week will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you can practice 5-6 times a week you will start to see amazing benefits to your physical, mental and emotional self.
It is normal to feel a little strange after your first couple of classes. That’s why we have the Intro Pass – so you can get a good number of classes in before making an informed decision about Bikram Yoga. If you feel dizzy or nauseous after class, this is a good sign that your body is starting to rid itself of toxins. It could also mean that you are dehydrated so it is very important to rehydrate – that includes water and electrolytes as you need to replace the minerals that you have lost during heavy sweating. Sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium are all important minerals needed for hydration and we sell various electrolytes containing these at the studio.
